1. Can ICTs be innovatively used in the absence of minimum literacy levels among the poor?

Yes it can, looking at the case study regarding the information lady in Bangladesh; she was able to visit households in the villagers with a set of ICT’s like: small portable laptops, digital cameras, mobile phones, GPRS internet connectivity, headphones, webcam and other light equipments such as weighing measurement machines, blood pressure machines, pregnancy tests and sugar tests kits etc. She listens to the villager’s livelihood problems and helps them with preloaded offline Bangla language livelihood, audio -visual content and online information from the web.

By using this initiative she is able to conquer the challenge of creating an infrastructure and the triple illiteracy of rural people (illiterate, ICT illiterate and information illiterate).

The handicap people, poor people are now offered a range of services at their doorstep and low cost solution.

The is a range of ICT’s and most may require basic level of education like your laptops etc and some without basic level of education may not be able to use them to the full potential but may be able to use it specifically for their need.

Take the information transmitted on radio’s, Television, using public address systems, fax that distributed by individuals, these methods can be used to communicate information regarding; Weather conditions for farmers and fisherman’s benefit, for farmers to get information regarding agricultural market practices, finance etc. and fisherman to be warned if it is safe or unsafe to sail, getting information regarding weather conditions. Two way radios can also be used. These can be achieved in the absence of minimum literacy levels.
2. How can the same ICTs be used for multiple purposes? What steps are needed to use, say the Internet for meeting the educational and health needs of poor female farmers in an isolated rural community?

ICT’s like radio, TV, Mobile phones, computers with internet, public address systems can be used for multiple purposes like – to address core sectors of development and provide access to information and knowledge, access to income generating opportunities, access to public service and agriculture, rural development and education.

A female farmer with the use of the internet will be able to get information regarding agricultural market practices, finance etc and will be able to communicate and network with others worldwide.

In terms of education they will be able to continue studying using system called open learning system which provides formal education through distance learning methods to out of school youth , disadvantaged and poor communities who otherwise, for financial reasons not able to access education.

This will be achieves through what we call e-Health which is an umbrella term that includes aspects of ICT use in health care like telemedicine. Telemedicine is the most frequent application in the health sector followed by continuing medical education and improving the quality or research network.
Women in a rural area can use the internet to get advice or consultant to provide over long distance via satellite. With telemedicine they will be able to connect to a specialist in the nearby area who will be able to capture and transmit clinical data from multiple sources to facilitate diagnosis and treatment.

    UNISA EUP1501 - Where the hell should I start??

    So this is unfortunately a compulsory module and I haven't the faintest idea as to where I should start. The first assignment requires you to read up on a topic found in 'Reddi' p.28 to 30. The problem is that I don't know where to find the reading material.

    I'm sure its all easy and simple, so I would really appreciate any help. Thanks

    hmm...well you'll have to wait for someone else to help you then. I still think page numbers are a strong indication of a book being involved. Maybe an ebook?

    Thanks. That's what I thought too. But in the Tutorial letter they made it clear (according to my limited understanding) that there are no prescribed books etc..

    Hope you've already been helped as the assignment was due yesterday 01/08/14. But anyway, under "learning activities", you should have clicked the assignment one instruction, the document you're suppose to read downloads automatically. OR go to: Forums->Learning Unit 1 Discussions->Assignment 1. That is were you're suppose to submit your assignment, looking the would have gave an idea of what is required by checking other student's answers. That's how I understood what the heck was required from me.

    Anyway, we have formed skype groups with some students, the EUP1501 is also available. If you want details, let me know.
